The tragic Highway 87 crash in Sabine Pass, Texas, has now claimed a fifth life following the death of 22-year-old Caleb Burge, deepening the sorrow surrounding one of the region’s most devastating roadway accidents in recent memory. Family members, friends, and community residents are mourning the heartbreaking loss as investigators continue searching for answers about the multi-vehicle collision that left several others injured.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Caleb Burge passed away after suffering severe injuries in the crash and receiving treatment at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. His death comes days after the violent accident involving a Chevrolet Express passenger van, a Prevost passenger bus, and an Audi on Highway 87 in Sabine Pass on Monday afternoon.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred around 4 p.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Chevrolet Express van was traveling northwest when it suddenly crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and collided head-on with the passenger bus traveling southeast. Shortly after the initial collision, an Audi crashed into the rear of the bus, creating a devastating chain-reaction accident scene.
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Officials identified them as Cesar Rojas, 28, of Baytown, who was driving the van, along with passengers Emmanuel Reynosa Rivas, 27, Angel Dominguez, 28, and Osvaldo Alvarez, 37. The later passing of Caleb Burge has now increased the death toll to five, leaving multiple families grieving unimaginable losses.
Several additional individuals suffered injuries in the collision and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities stated that some victims have since been released, while others continue receiving medical care. Those identified among the injured include Raul Silberio Trujillo, 38, Rodolfo Garay Jr., 37, Fernando Rojas, 50, and Robert Zackery Sebastia Hoyt, 26. The driver of the passenger bus, a 48-year-old man from Vidor, and the driver of the Audi, a 28-year-old man from Rosharon, were also hospitalized following the incident.
The crash prompted a significant emergency response as law enforcement officers, firefighters, and medical teams rushed to the scene to assist victims and secure the highway. Investigators remain focused on determining what caused the van to cross into oncoming traffic and whether additional contributing factors played a role in the deadly collision.
In a statement released after the accident, LNG officials confirmed they are cooperating fully with investigators. The company also extended condolences to all families affected by the tragedy, explaining that the bus involved in the crash had been contracted through an EPC contractor and was empty at the time of the collision.
As the investigation continues, the Sabine Pass community remains united in grief and support for the victims and their loved ones. The growing death toll has left many residents shaken, while friends and family members remember those lost in the tragic accident.
